Mary Janet Cochran (neé Walker) was born in Saranac Lake around 1915 to Mary and Arthur Walker. She worked as a cook for Post Office Pharmacy prior to the mid-40s. She married Herbert Cochran and they had four children, along with two children from Herbert's previous marriage. She also worked at the American Medical Association, and was the switchboard operator at the Saranac Lake General Hospital.

Mary once won a contest through Pepsi to do a shopping spree in Grand Union. Her daughter Janet remembers that Mary thought it was as joke when she got the call. She also remembered that the store packed up bundles of meat and other groceries for her to grab off the shelves, and she had to take Pepsi products, of course.
