Brayton, as he was known, came for the cure c. 1914. He came with Helen and together they lived in Lake Clear Junction. They knew Paul Smith. Maurice and Helen both died of Spanish flu and left two young children, who were adopted by family members (John by William Richard and Martha Roberts Gosling; Margaret by Harry and Elisabeth Gosling) and raised in the Utica area. Paul Smith Jr. was John Gosling's godfather.
