Former local restaurateur Moses W. LaFountain dies

SARANAC LAKE - Moses W. LaFountain, 84, formerly of 28 Catherine Street, Saranac Lake, died Friday afternoon, Sept. 26, at Sacred Heart Nursing Home in Plattsburgh.

Mr. LaFountain was a restaurateur in the Saranac Lake area, and had owned The Birches in Ray Brook and Durgan's Restaurant near Saranac Lake before his retirement.

Born Jan. 12, 1902, in Black Brook, he was the son of Jerry and Phoebe (Wilkins) LaFountain.

He had been a resident of Saranac Lake since 1910, and for the past 16 years had spent his winters in Florida.

His wife, the former Beatrice Stone, died Sept. 29, 1982.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Malcolm (Peppy) Fobare of Saranac Lake; three sons, James and Moses, both of Lake Placid, and Gerald of Dallas, Tex.; a sister, Mrs. Phoebe Lovergine of Light House Point, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Fortune Funeral Home and include a Bible vigil at 7:15.

A Mass of the resurrection will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's Church with the Rev. Francis Coryer and the Rev. Douglas Cornstock officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery.
