Northwoods Day CottageAddress: Now part of the parking garage behind the Hotel Saranac

Old Address: 9 1/2 Church Street

Other names: Bungalow at Northwoods Sanatorium

Year built:

The Northwoods Day Cottage sat at the back of the lot formerly occupied by Northwoods Sanatorium, for which it was an annex. The Day Cottage was the home of the owners of Northwoods Sanatorium, who also took in nursing (non-ambulatory or bedridden) patients. It was an annex to the vastly larger Northwoods at 9 Church Street, which burned February 27, 1974. A graduate nurse was in charge of patients. The T.B. Society cards describe the two buildings as of 9/22/1925: "Both houses partly maintained by actors association and Adirondack Fund. Good equipment and house in nice shape." The house was also partly subsidized by the telephone company for its afflicted employees, a common pattern. It once had a rock garden and a pool.

Around 1950, a first floor kitchen was added. The Day Cottage was acquired by Paul Smith's College and used as a dormitory for Culinary Arts and Hospitality students who worked at the adjacent, college-owned Hotel Saranac. By 1983 the cottage's cure porches had been altered (probably enclosed). The college demolished the cottage in 1988 after the new residence hall on Church Street opened in January. 1
