The Old Military Road approached Saranac Lake from Bloomingdale, it turned in from the Saranac River near the present Trudeau Road and came out through what became Highland Park, descending Grove Street to the river again, crossing an old wooden bridge (later replaced with an iron one) near Baker's. Later, it was re-routed along the river, leaving the Azel Lathrop farm cut off from the main road. (The above account of the route of the Old Military Road, based on Donaldson's History of the Adirondacks, does not take into account the segment of the Old Military Road that bypasses Lake Placid. Mary MacKenzie spelled out the route of the Northwest Bay/Old Military Road in her article in the Franklin Historical Review. Donaldson seems to have combined the routes of two "Old Military Roads.") 1
The present Saranac Lake village street called Old Military Road is a segment of the original Northwest Bay/Old Military Road. Deed evidence indicates that at one time this village street was called Highland Avenue. Another segment still bearing its original name bypasses Lake Placid. A state historic marker near the intersection of the "new" Lake Colby Road and Trudeau Road identifies the loop at the entry to Camp Colby/Camp Intermission and behind Tissot's Constuction as the Northwest Bay Road.
