Ona Wheeler Allen was known for her private duty nursing and taking care of neighborhood children. She came to Saranac Lake as a child and lived with her Aunt Hattie and Uncle Will Skinner. She worked at 36 Kiwassa Road.

Saranac Lake - Ona v. Allen, 86, of 28 Virginia St., Saranac Lake died Thursday evening, Sept. 30, 1982, at Saranac Lake General Hospital.

She was born Feb. 9, 1896, in Spencer, the daughter of William. and May (MacWhorter) Wheeler. She had been a resident of Saranac Lake for the past 82 years. Years ago she was employed as a licensed practical nurse for Dr. Wardner. She was also a private duty nurse for many area cure cottages.

Her husband, William E. Allen, died in 1981.

She leaves a son, William P. Allen of Saranac Lake; a sister, Mrs. Iva Gould of Horseheads; two grandchildren, Miss Ona Allen of Vancouver, Wash, and William Allen of Saranac Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Fortune Funeral Home from 1 to 3 p.m. today.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at the funeral home. The Rev. William Hayes will officiate.

Burial will follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the Saranac Lake Rescue Squad.
