Panther Mountain from Upper Saranac Lake, 2013The view north from Panther Mountain, c. 1909. The large finger of land near the center of the photograph is Deer Island; Bull Point is on the shore at the left side of Deer Island. Below and left of Deer Island is the Wawbeek Hotel. The island directly above Deer Island is Eagle Island. To the right of Deer Island is a small archipelago of islands including Doctor's Island and Birch Island.  The northernmost part of the photo shows the Narrows and Markham Point. Saint Regis Mountain is on the horizon, just left of center.
This view of Upper Saranac Lake from Panther Mountain is now obscured by trees.
Panther Mountain is a 2241-foot mountain at the southern end of Upper Saranac Lake. Nearby Panther Pond and Panther Mountain Road are named for the mountain.

Colorized postcard looking up Upper Saranac Lake to the north from Panther Mountain.  Undated, but postmarked July 19, 1922.
Similar to the 1909 view, but including the southernmost part of the lake and Corey's Island, right.
A handwritten message on back reads in part, "...Received word at 2:30 that they would take me at Trudeau at 4. Believe me I hustled.
Norma helped me pack. Had to borrow suitcase from her. They are going to send after my trunk tomorrow."

There was a treat in store for the children at The Wawbeek this week when the mail-carrier left a live "Teddy Bear," a three-weeks' old bear cub, captured back of Panther Mountain. The little fellow, as playful as a kitten, is a merry little bundle of fun and fur.
