Sgt Urgo, Missing, Won Air Medal

The war department has cited Sgt. Pascal Urgo, who is missing over the Pacific, as one of the crew that brought a B-24 Liberator bomber back safely after it was tossed around the skies helplessly when caught in a thunderhead. The other New Yorker in the crew was Lt. Ralph E. Smalley of Friendship. All members of the 10-man crew were reported missing in action in a subsequent mission on April 2. Urgo is a nephew of Mrs. James d'Amico of Lake Placid.

The bomber was flying in formation on the way to bomb Racaul when it hit a series of air drafts. The top hatch door was ripped off and one of the bomb bay doors was ripped from its track. The crew succeeded in regaining a level flight and Smalley salvoed his load of 100-pound bombs into the water. The plane was then brought back to the air field.

On April 1, Mr. and Mrs. Pascal Urgo, parents of the young sergeant, were informed by Gen. Usher of the air force that their son had received the air medal for his work. Just two weeks later they received word that he was missing in action.

Sgt. Urgo served in the air corps for more than a year. He was in action overseas five months. He saw action over the European continent and in the Pacific theater.
