Phebe Washer came to Saranac Lake in 1874; one year later, she married Charles F. Gray, who built the Berkeley House, and who died April 26, 1883. With Mrs. E. L. Trudeau, Mrs. Calista O'Brien, Mrs. Ida Reynolds, and others, Mrs. Gray was a charter member of the Ladies' Guild of St. Luke's.
Phil Gallos wrote in Cure Cottages of Saranac Lake that the Gray Homestead at 18 Front Street was probably the first house built on Helen Hill. Mrs. Gray, a widow, purchased the lot in September 1892.
