Philip L. Gallos moved to Saranac Lake in 1957; he has lived here most of his life, with the exception of his college years and an interlude in San Francisco during which the Berkeley Hotel burned down. He majored in English at Towson State University in Maryland, graduating in 1970. He studied photography under Helmmo Kinderman at the Lake Placid School of Art and for four years was a reporter/photographer for the Adirondack Daily Enterprise in Saranac Lake.
Phil is the author of By Foot in the Adirondacks, a hiker's guide with emphasis on the social and natural history of the northern Adirondack region, released by Adirondack Publishing Co. in 1972. From 1982 until 1985, he worked as a researcher and writer specializing in historic preservation, resulting in the publication of his second book, Cure Cottages of Saranac Lake, published by Historic Saranac Lake.
For many years, he has worked as a librarian, first at Paul Smith's College, and subsequently at North Country Community College. Photography and writing short fiction occupy much of his free time.
