SARANAC LAKE - Richard J. Madden, 80, of 35 Helen St., died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Born on July 31, 1917 in Saranac Lake, he was the son of Michael and Mary (Fee) Madden.

A life long resident of Saranac Lake, he was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant from 1942 to 1946. Upon returning to Saranac Lake, he worked for the New York Conservation Department and later became a letter carrier for the Saranac Lake Post Office for 30 years, retiring in 1976.

He worked on a part-time basis for Towsley Liquors and later Tom Ward at Saranac Lake Discount Liquors until 1991. He was a member of the American Legion and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was known as an avid reader.

Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Jane Senn, whom he married on April 5, 1948; a son, Michael of Saranac Lake; a brother, Clarence J. Madden, of Rochester; several nieces and nephews, including Sister Carolyn Madden and Eileen LaPlante, both of Saranac Lake, Betty Woodard of Newport N.H.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and Francis Madden and a sister, Kathryn Lang.

Calling hours will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake. Burial will be in the parish cemetery in May.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad in care of the funeral home.
