Brooklyn man refurbishing Saranac Lanes bowling alley

SARANAC LAKE - For about three decades, Jeffrey Romano's side job has been working at Shell Lanes in Brooklyn. Not anymore.
Romano is in the process of taking over ownership of the bowling alley and bar on Bloomingdale Avenue near the corner of Broadway, He plans to keep its name, Saranac Lanes, although he'll drop the name of the bar, the Rondack Room.
Romano said he expects the sale to be closed Friday and hopes to have the bowling alley and sports bar open by August. Renovations have already begun as the place is undergoing a complete overhaul. Construction is being overseen by Jack Levitt, who has subcontracted out the work. Levitt is the seller.
Currently a resident of East Northport, Long Island, Romano has been a weekend manager at Shell Lanes, which has 32, lanes, for about 10 years. Overall, he's worked there for about 30 years in one capacity or another.
"Bowling's been a part of me for a long time," said Romano, who recently retired from his fulltime job as a corrections officer at Riker's Island jail in New York City.
When the bowling alley opens, it's expected to have eight bowling lanes with automated scoreboard. There will be a snack bar, arcade, and a sports bar.
Romano said he became interested in the property when he came across it during a recent trip to the area to visit his wife's family.
Romano, who plans on relocating to the area, plans on having a diversity of leagues for women, men and children. "Leagues are a great thing to get families together, and it's a great thing to bring people, together," he said.
