Ruth Mayer Seidenstein was a teacher and the first director of the Saranac Lake Head Start Program. She lived at 69 Riverside Drive.

SARANAC LAKE — Ruth M. Seidenstein, 81, of 69 Riverside Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1992 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Born Jan. 3, 1911 in New York City, she was the daughter of Louis and Lenore (Starr) Mayer. She married Dr. J.L. Seidenstein, who predeceased her on Feb. 27, 1956.

A graduate of City College of New York, she was employed as a school teacher in New York City. In 1946 she moved to Saranac Lake, where she provided services for the hearing impaired. She was a substitute teacher in the Saranac Lake School District for many years, and was the first director of the Saranac Lake Head Start Program, where she worked for 12 years, until her retirement in 1980.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Seidenstein of Fort Meyers, Fla. and Bob Seidenstein of Saranac Lake; and four grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held Friday and Saturday at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. both days. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday at Pine Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of memorial donations, friends are asked to perform any act of kindness they wish.
