Ruth Zerfass Cheeseman operated Cheesman's IGA with her husband, Clyde.  She was a daughter of Byron and Ida (Rowe) Zerfass.

SARANAC LAKE — Ruth Z. Cheesman, 96, formerly of 20 Church St., Saranac Lake, died Sunday, May 9, 1993 at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid, where she had been a resident for the past year.

Born June 18, 1896 in Dansville, she was the daughter of Byron and Ida (Rowe) Zerfass.

A resident of Saranac Lake since 1923, when she married Clyde C. Cheesman, she was a graduate of Cortland Normal School and taught school in the Rochester area for many years. She was a founding member of the Saranac Lake Adult Center and was a volunteer there for many years. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Along with her husband she owned Cheesman's IGA on Lake Street for 10 years, from the early 1940s to the early 1950s.

Survivors include a son, Robert C. Cheesman of Ballston Lake; four grandchildren, David Cheesman of Schenectady, Nancy Siska of Long Beach, Calif., Betsy Berrera of Ithaca, and Patricia Cheesman of Hollywood, Calif.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Her husband predeceased her on Oct 27, 1984. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Henry and Milton.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Jesse Corum, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will follow in North Elba Cemetery in Lake Placid.

Memorial donations may be made to the Saranac Lake Adult Center or the First Presbyterian Church.
