Sheldon W. Damsky, known as Shel, was a retired land use lawyer, well known for his professional work on local plans. He co-authored Everything You've Always Wanted to Know About Zoning with his friend and colleague, James Coon. While living at 43 Shepard Avenue in Saranac Lake, he volunteered in the Adirondack Room of the Saranac Lake Free Library. Inspired by what he read there (he learned that his own grandfather had once been a patient), he wrote two historical novels set in the Schwartz Cottage: Saranac Lake Requiem and Saranac Lake Revisited. He was working on his fifth novel at the time of his death.
