This view of Mrs. Buckingham and her students at the elementary school on Algonquin Avenue around 1912 was signed in pencil "H. R. Moody." Only four of the children are identified: Anna Rice (Woodruff), back row, second from right; George Clark, back row, third from left; Edward Rice, back row, just to the right of the teacher; and Alison Rice, front row, third from left. Since Alison and Edward are marked with tiny Xs above their heads, it seems to be a Rice family photo. In the Adirondack Daily Enterprise on Oct. 17, 1987, historian John Duquette wrote: "The old Algonquin School was sandwiched between the Henry Leis home and Mr. Eppie's bar and bowling alley on Algonquin Avenue. [The location is now part of the La Pan Highway.] It was a small, wood-frame building with one classroom and one teacher to handle all of the first five grades... Mrs. Buckingham was the lone teacher to serve all five grades and maintain discipline." Courtesy of the Adirondack Research Room, Saranac Lake Free Library.
