In February 1943 Toralf Toresen was named as one of the Norwegian merchant seamen at Stony Wold Sanatorium who were studying Americanization English with Mrs. Edward H. Levy. The Guild News article was titled "Guild Resumes Stony Wold Classes; Torpedoed Norsemen Study English."

Toresen also stayed at the Sageman Cottage. At Sageman's one Christmas, Toresen applied for a pair of trousers from the Social Welfare Committee for Norwegian Seamen in America, and evidently received a suit.
