The Town of North Elba, in Essex County, encompasses the southeastern part of the Village of Saranac Lake, which overlays parts of the Town of Harrietstown, Franklin County, and Town of St. Armand and Town of North Elba in Essex County. This makes for an enormously complicated governmental system, the most complex in New York State. The North Elba Town House on River Street in Saranac Lake is an auxiliary "town hall" for the convenience of North Elba residents of this village in voting and occasional other governmental functions.
