Victor C. Blumenthal, a local businessman for many years, has retired after 48 years as a watchmaker.

He was born in Saranac Lake and attended schools here and later took a watchmaking course at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. After graduation he took a position in Huntington, W. Va., with C. M. Wallace and Son but soon returned to Saranac Lake and began working with Fred E. Hull.

When World War I broke out he enlisted and saw service in France. After the war he returned to Saranac Lake and continued to work for Fred Hull. In 1921 he married Helen Jeffery and they had a son, Carl who died in service in World War II.

After World War II the business changed hands a number of times. Mr. Hull sold out to Munn and Lamy; Munn and Lamy sold out to Matt Munn who sold out to William Scheefer, Sr. in 1947 Mr. Blumenthal left that firm and opened a business with S. W. Smith, an optometrist at 96 Main Street, which continued until Mr. Blumenthal's retirement. Mr. Smith will continue as optometrist.
