W. Russell Woodruff
On July 4, 1942 he was married to the former Mary Rose Lamitie in St. Bernard's Church.
Mr. Woodruff enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force on June 25, 1942. and served in World War II in the Air Transport Command in the mid-Eastern theater in Africa. Egypt, Iran, and the Sudan. He was discharged on Oct 26. His military decorations include two Purple Hearts, four Air Medals, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Legion of Merit, and the Silver Star.
He was employed as a carpenter at Branch and Callanan for 25 years, and later worked as a custodian at St. Bernard's School. He was the head custodian in the Saranac Lake Central School District until his retirement in 1980.
Mr. Woodruff was a member of the Rhythm Rascals, and played and sang in various areas of Northern New York.
Survivors include his wife; six sons, R. Joseph of Saranac Lake, William H. of Burlington, N.C.. Wayne D. of Isle LaMott, Vt . Ronald L. of Medford, N.J., Michael V. and Eric M., both of Saranac Lake; three daughters. Mrs. Judith (Douglas) Duquette of Gabriels, Mrs. Bonnie (Robert) Mclntyre of Bloomingdale, and Janet Marie Haggerty of Saranac Lake; two brothers, Clayton and Arnold, both of Saranac Lake; a sister Mrs. Corrine Moody of Saranac Lake, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Michael, a sister, Muriel, and a brother, Gerald.
Calling hours will he held from 2 to 4 p m and 7 to 9 p m. Sunday at the Fortune Keough Funeral Home. A Bible Vigil Service will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:15 a.m. Monday at St. Bernard's Church. Burial will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Dept. or St. Bernard’s School
