W.S. Smith, 78, Formerly Of This City, Is Dead

Massena — Funeral services for Willard S. Smith, 78, of 20 Clark St., will be held Wednesday with a prayer service in the morning at the home after which the body will be taken to Gabriels for burial.

Mr. Smith died Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the family home after being seriously ill for the past four weeks.

He was born Oct. 1, 1863, in Gouverneur, a son of George W. and Mariette Petrie Smith. His grandfather, Samuel Smith, came from Vermont and was one of the pioneer settlers in Gouverneur.

When he was two years old, the family moved to Canton and he attended schools there. In the fall of 1887 he went to Ogdensburg and worked for nearly two years driving horses on the old horse car line. A short time later he entered the hotel business and at the height of his career he owned the Waverly House at St. Regis Falls, the Hotel Riley at Gabriels and Pine Lodge at Rainbow Lake. Mr. Smith married twice. His first wife was Miss Delia Mitchell, Black Lake, whom he married Mar. 21, 1888. She died Sept. 28, 1904. On Aug. 29, 1913, he married Mrs. Delia Prespare Carroll, St. Regis Falls.

Surviving are his wife; three sons and three daughters, Gilbert Ray Smith, address unknown, Josiah E. Smith, Gabriels, Ward S. Smith, Fulton, Mrs. Ward Young, Massena, Mrs. Fred Rombough, Saranac Lake; Mrs. Jack Ferrieti, Saranac Lake; three stepsons, Harold A. Carroll, Massena, Bernard J. Carroll, Ogdensburg, Raymond C. Carroll, Schenectady, Mrs. Robert Bowes, Bath; two brothers, Edward Smith, Fulton, and Herbert Smith, Canton.
