William A. Leavitt was the son of Arthur and Eleanor (McMaster) Leavitt. He operated the Leavitt Farm in Gabriels for many years.

SARANAC LAKE - William Arthur Leavitt, 81, of Gabriels, and Winter Haven, Fla. died Friday, April 3, 1998 at the L.H.S. Nursing Home in Auburndale. Fla.
Born on Dec. 16, 1916 in Saranac Lake, he was the son of Arthur and Eleanor (McMaster) Leavitt. He was a lifelong resident of Gabriels. He owned and operated Leavitt Farms Inc. in Gabriels until his retirement. He graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1935 and later graduated from Cornell University in 1939. Since his retirement, he had spent winters in Florida.
He was the former chairman of the Certified Foundation Seed Committee of New York, a former president of the Adirondack Potato Growers Association and a past member and past chairman of the Brighton Planning Board.
Survivors include: his wife, Lenore (Newell) Leavitt of Gabriels .whom he married in 1943 at the Presbyterian Church in Keese Mills; three sons, Robert Leavitt of Churubusco. Arthur Leavitt of Gabriels, David Leavitt; of Glenmont; a sister, Eleanor Leavitt of Gabriels; and nine grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, at the funeral home with the Rev. William Neil, of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Brighton Cemetery in Gabriels.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Saranac Lake, the Paul Smiths-Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department or the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad in care of the funeral home.
