William J. Callanan with Augustine Branch, founded Saranac Lake's most famous construction company, Branch and Callanan on May 16, 1892; Callanan was the active partner. He was the brother of Michael J. Callanan, one of the founders of the Adirondack Hardware Company. He was also involved in the formation of the General Hospital of Saranac Lake. He lived at 19 Academy Street. He was elected village trustee in 1902.
He moved to Saranac Lake from Keeseville in 1893. 1

Native of Keeseville Died Late Friday Night at Saranac Lake
Funeral services for William J. Callanan, pioneer resident of Saranac Lake who died late Friday night at his home in that village, will be held this morning at nine o'clock. The requiem Mass will be celebrated in St. Bernard's church by Very Rev. Dean Clarence Kitts, pastor. Burial will be in the family plot in Immaculate Conception cemetery at Keeseville.
Mr. Callanan was a native of Keeseville and born April 7, 1854, a son of Cornelius and Mary Quinn Callahan of Ireland. He attended school at Keeseville and on January 26, 1887, married the former Margaret Tindal [sic] who died several years ago. At the time of his marriage he was superintendent of the [illegible]
The late Mr. Callanan entered a partnership with the late A. S. Branch and besides operating a building construction company later opened a lumber yard and mill at Saranac Lake. Among the structures built under his supervision were the main buildings at Trudeau sanatorium, Will Rogers Memorial hospital, St. Regis hotel, Saranac Lake General hospital at Saranac Lake and Lake Placid High school building, post office and North Elba town hall. He built the Knights of Columbus wings at Gabriels sanatorium.
Survivors are his son Andrew W. Callanan, general manager of the firm organized by his father; a daughter, Mrs. Paul Jacquet of Albany; four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Callanan was a member of Saranac Lake Council Knights of Columbus, Saranac Lake Lodge of Elks, the Saranac Lake club, Holy Name Society of St. Bernard's church.
