Guide of Governors Passes at Saranac

Funeral of William H. Titus, sr., 73, pioneer Adirondack guide and close friend of the late Paul Smith, was held last week. Known throughout Northern New York, Titus was employed for many years as caretaker in various large camps in the St. Regis lakes sections. While in that capacity he still carried on as a guide. He enjoyed the reputation of being one of the best informed guides in Northern New York. In his half century as a woodsman, Titus guided many prominent persons, including two governors of New York state and a vice-president. He regretted not having had an opportunity to take the late President Calvin Coolidge on a fishing trip when Coolidge was summering at Paul Smiths in 1926.

From Geraldine Collins The Brighton Story

WILLIAM H. TITUS - Began his guiding career at Paul Smiths at the age of 17. He was a nephew of Paul Smith. When he was interviewed in 1937 he recalled that things were all different back 30 years ago. Then you brought along a side of salt pork and some flour for hot cakes and you stayed in the woods until everyone in the party got a buck. It was nothing to carry a 25-pound pack basket and walk 20 miles a day.
