William Raymond Root, Sr. was the founder of Lone Pine Camp on Osgood Pond in 1921. He lived in Brooklyn, New York.

William R. Root

William Raymond Root, Sr., an educator and founder of the Lone Pine Camp at Paul Smiths, died at 9:30 today at the Saranac Lake General Hospital.

Mr. Root has been known in this area for over 50 years and had been a permanent resident for the past five years, at 20 Franklin Avenue, Saranac Lake.

He was born in Brooklyn, a son of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. F. Root, and was graduated from Columbia University in 1912. He was a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.

An educator for over 45 years he had taught at St. Bernard's School and the Browning School for Boys, both in New York City, the Kingswood School in West Hartford, Conn., and Englewood School for Boys in Englewood, N. J.

He founded Lone Pine Camp in 1921.

Survivors are a sister, Miss Marie L. Root of 20 Franklin Ave., Saranac Lake; a son. William R. Root, Jr. of New York City; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Everett Root; and two grandchildren, James and William. Friends may call at the Fortune Funeral Home on Monday evening. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of St. Luke, the beloved physician.

Burial will be in St. John's in-the-Wilderness Church at Paul Smiths.
