Tommy's Rock

Tommy's Rock is a small island in Upper Saranac Lake about 300 yards from the former site of Saranac Inn at the north end of the lake. It is presently owned by the Upper Saranac Lake Foundation. 1 A rope swing off a low cliff was a popular swimming spot. The island is used to launch fireworks displays on the Fourth of July.

A reader writes:

"I don't recall there ever being any kind of rope swing on Tommy's Rock, but there was a rope swing on the far side of Green Island nearby that was taken down just a few years ago. Tommy's Rock was owned by the Saranac Inn and shared with anyone who cared to boat there and jump off its 'cliff'. I recall mustering the courage to jump off as a small child in the early 1960s. Tommy's Rock was auctioned off when the Saranac Inn went out of business in the early 1960s. For many years it stayed in private hands, posted 'no trespassing' by the owner who 'improved' it by building a shed-roofed shack that, viewed from the western shore, looked like an outhouse. The Saranac Lake Association then bought Tommy's Rock, tore down the shack, and restored the little island to its natural state. Best of all, it is again open to all who want to jump from the 'cliff'."
