Buffalo is a little over 150 miles northwest of Ithaca, and is the furthest west city in the chain of cities across upstate NY. It is the second largest city in New York State (with Rochester a distant third), and suffers from many of the problems that Rochester does while continuing its conversion from a blue-collar/steel mill town to a modern economy. 1
