Cortland County on OpenStreetMap Cortland County, named after Pierre Van Cortlandt, president of the convention at Kingston that wrote the first New York State Constitution in 1777, and first lieutenant governor of the state, is a county within New York State located in the center of northwest New York. Cortland County contains the City of Cortland, the county seat, and contains the entire Cortland MISA.

Cortland County was founded in 1808, covers 502 square miles, and had a 2000 population of 48,599. The Cortland Apple (Wikipedia) was named after the area.

The county is bisected from north to south by Interstate 81 which carries traffic from the Syracuse area to Binghamton and Pennsylvania.
