Sticky Rice is a Thai and Laotian restaurant located at the bottom of State Street in the Gateway Plaza, tucked away in a back alley around the corner from Domino's Pizza. In a town not lacking its share of well established Thai restaurants, this unsuspecting dive is often considered to be Ithaca's best kept secret. In fact it is so hard to find, people get lost standing less than 100 feet away; a sign or store front isn't even visible from the main parking lot or any traversed street. Yet, this doesn't stop Sticky Rice from doing a ton of business. With only 4 tables, it is virtually impossible to eat food there on weekend evenings. Therefore take-out is recommended.

Unlike many Thai restaurants, they are very vegetarian friendly (i.e. vegetarian dishes are cooked with separate woks and utensils than meat dishes, and fish sauce or shrimp paste is never used in these dishes).

2009-04-03 17:32:25   This is the best food (not just Thai, but best overall) in all of Ithaca. Everything is amazing, extensive menu, great service, great prices. It is hard to find but well worth it. —ScottC

2009-04-03 20:42:46   For the money this is the best restaurant I have been to so far. It is the only place that has truly got the right flavor profile when it comes to Pad See Ew. Its a dish that has very few ingredients, but is quite challenging to make; believe me I've tried, and I make a fairly decent pad thai. Pad See Ew is a wide rice noodle sauteed in sweet soy sauce. They threw in some bok choy, which tasted good, even though its not traditionally in this dish (usually its Chinese broccoli). I can't wait to go back and try their other dishes. Warning: don't expect to find a table on weekends, order it to go (they only have 4 tables, which can each seat 4 people). Saturday night has a line out the door, so call up and order in advance and add a few minutes to the time they give. —MattHh
