Kitchener made the Guiness World Records books on Sunday July 15, 2012 when it successfully beat the record for the World's Longest Picnic Table, which was previously held by Halle, Germany. This picnic spanned two kilometers and had an attendance of 4,000 people.

The organizers of the Kitchener picnic estimated that more than 5,000 people attended the picnic, which measured 2,282 meters through the downtown streets.

The events saw the support of many local businesses that prepared picnic specials. There were also 70 volunteers who set up more than 1,000 tables and 8,000 chairs along the path of the picnic, which stretched down King Street from Victoria to Eby streets, then back along Duke Street to Francis Street.  Eight rental companies assisted with the project.
