LocalWiki is a grassroots effort to collect, share and open the world’s local knowledge.

We want anyone, anywhere to be able to learn about where they live: their local government, the history of their neighborhoods, streets, social movements, noteworthy local figures, social services, schools-–every facet of life in their community. And we believe that this vast collection of local knowledge should be created by the people who know it best: individual community members, working together.

LocalWiki is a non-profit.

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in San Francisco, California, but our contributors come from around the world. We are funded by foundation grants and community donations.  If you want to help our work, please consider making a donation!

LocalWiki is open.

All of the content on LocalWiki is CC-BY licensed, meaning that it's free to use and re-use by anyone so long as they credit LocalWiki contributors. See Copyrights for more information. Additionally, all the backend code powering LocalWiki is open-source.

LocalWiki is by and for local communities.

We believe that community members should get to define their community - what's important, what's unique, what's interesting, and what's meaningful - themselves. Community members, working together, get to decide what their LocalWiki project is like. Learn more about our local adminship policy.
