Birch was a station on a spur of the old Big Bay Branch of the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad between Marquette and Big Bay. A post office opened in 1905 and closed in 1920. It was settled around the Northern Lumber Company mill and store.

These 2 picture were posted to Facebook in the You Know you are from Marquette group by someone in either 2013 or early 2014. I do not remember who the person was. The lumber mill is from 1911 and the picture of Main St is from 1909
