Most of the soil in Menomonie is very sandy, although there are pockets of clay around Dunn Co.  Gardening in sandy soil requires inputs of organic matter, and usually more frequent watering.  Tree leaves are a good source of organic material, although pine and oak should be avoided in most circumstances.  If you can get manure that is an excellent source of both nutrients and organics, although non ruminant animals like horses can transmit weed seeds.

Menomonie is in USDA hardiness zone 4b.  The last spring frost date is May 14th and the first fall frost date is September 28 according to the Old Farmers Almanac.
