Mississauga is a lower-tier municipality within the Region of Peel. Government services are split between federal, provincial, regional and city governments.
Regional government
Peel Region is responsible for police, watermains, waste, regional roads and paramedics. Regional councillors are elected by residents and business owners, and these councillors in turn elect the regional chair.
City council and committees
The mayor and council are elected by residents and business owners. Committees consist either of all Council (committees of the whole) or of both councillors and volunteer citizens.
Corporate departments
City staff in four departments, led by the City Manager and commissioners, take care of day-to-day business.
