Toronto City Councillor Shelley Carroll (Left) and Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion (Right).

Name: Hazel McCallion

Position: Mayor

Notoriety: Sometimes called Hurricane Hazel both by media and the residents of the city.

Profile: Mayor McCallion is one of Canada's best known and longest-serving mayors. She was first elected in 1978.

At the age of 86, she was easily re-elected in the November 2006 municipal election for her eleventh consecutive term, holding a 91% majority of the votes. She was re-elected in the October 2010 election, Mayor McCallion has indicated this will be her last term and will not seek re-election in 2014 election.

She usually is reelected without even needing to conduct an actual election campaign.

Hazel McCallion celebrated her 90th birthday on Monday February 14, 2011.

A Gala Dinner was held on Saturday February 12 to honour her and a free public event was also held at The Living Arts Centre on Sunday February 13th.

2009-08-27 12:26:43   Her refusal to retire has cost one generation of politicians the chance to run for the position. That lack of contest serves to keep voter turnout low and doesn't allow fresh blood and ideas into Council. Sadly Ms. McCallion announced that she would run once more in 2010 at the age of 89, some should review actuarial mortality tables - we will all pass at some point. She should become our cherished Past Mayor and held in all respect. —AlanForde

2009-09-24 23:37:16   With news stories about her conflict of interest convictions, new charges of the same and the gaff in revealing confidential discussions with a developer in General Committee September 23rd - I must withdraw the "held in all respect" part of my prior post. —AlanForde
