the fence man - nov'07. (located in campbell; different from stan the fence man) very nice & responsive. all custom made, no pre-fab. appears to be quite tough & heavy weight. scott (i assume the owner), stopped by each day to check on his crew. this fence will outlive us.

I withdrew my recommendation for Jim Lyon's. He tends to create work for himself and did not finish the job satisfactory. I believe others in the neighborhood have had similar experience. I used Sturdy Fence Co., Mike Hampel, 650-969-2844 for my last fence work. He by far had the cheapest bid. The fence is not the highest quality and I think it should be sealed. His crew was not very gentle on the plants. Anyway you get what you pay for and for the amount I paid I'm happy with the result.

A couple of possibilities. Eggi (MLN msg on 4/11) recommended Jim Lyon 408-460-1625 for various types of handyman work. He has a website www.jimlyonsdesign.com that lists all the different types of work his company does, which is quite extensive and impressive. I'm planning to call him for a variety of jobs at our house, but haven't worked with him personally yet.

I used Bay Area Fence & Deck, San Jose. Though their price was low, I would not use them again. Life is short and there are better choices out there. Sloppy with the concrete posts and the gates never, ever closed properly, despite repeated housecalls. Owners unpleasant to deal with.

Bay Area Fence & Deck, San Jose installed our fences a few years ago. It was chosen because of its lower price, but it did a so-so job—my and my neighbor's gates don't close right. Recently I discovered that it had buried garbage, including concrete, in my yard along the fence! Never use it, again.

I had talked to a couple of people, but this guy was very no nonsense and was able to come out right away. His prices were reasonable. The job was very thorough and efficient.

we have gone with Sierra Fence and were VERY happy. they did 2 of our 3 fences, but i must say that you have to be careful since i did have a good friend across town NOT have a good experience. sierra installed boards that had black marks all over them (most of the slats), could be that their landlord paid for inferior wood, could be that sierra thought that the renters would not care, i don't know. but be precise about getting good boards if you go w/them. (though we had NO trouble whatsoever!!!)

My next-door neighbor Jim contacted several companies before we replaced the fence between us in 2003. Jim chose A.C. Lumber in San Jose (650/949-3966 or 408/298-8723). We were satisfied with their work. I used AC again a few months later to replace my other side fence. On that side, they angled the fence around a tree that had grown to be too near the property line, but 
that both my neighbors and I wanted to keep.

We used A.C. Lumber and were satisfied overall. We think we got a good fence at a good price. We did have a few issues with them: 
* We wanted a custom gate built and had several discussions with the salesperson (Lucky). Lucky clearly understood what we wanted, but when the work crew arrived they did not know anything about it and I had to instruct them (in Spanish). 
* The work crew did not install quite enough flashing where the fence meets the house, leaving a gap of a few inches that I will have to deal with. 
* The work crew left cigarette butts in our yard and a beer bottle in our recycling, which doesn't seem professional.

Our last fencing job was done by Squires Lumber & Fence in San Jose: 
(408) 971-9663. They tore out a bit of old fence, replaced it with 24 lin. 
ft. of 6 ft. high "good neighbor" redwood, at $27 per lin. ft., and a 7 ft. 
gate for an extra $243. Nice one-day job, and they would have taken away the 
rubbish - but we wanted it!

Some months back, I asked for recommendations for fence builders & promised to report back once the project was done.

We got three quotes & selected George Ino (408 926-2003), who works with Squires Lumber & Fence in San Jose (408 971-9663). We are happy with the results and want to pass on his name to others.

A caution: when I first contacted George by phone, I was concerned because it was difficult to understand him. When we met him, he explained he'd had a stroke some years back.

George clearly knows fences & we managed fine. We liked that he pointed out the value of using a "kickboard" & that he gave us the option of using cedar or redwood (cedar is considered as 
tough as redwood, more likely farm-grown, & is slightly cheaper). And on once the project was underway, he & his crew worked hard & were cheerful & conscientious.

Not all construction projects go smoothly, but we are happy about this one.

I actually had Mike from Sturdy Fence out to bid our 
job, and he seemed OK. But I got a lower bid and 
better feeling from Trey at Sierra Fence. His number 
is 408-279-0108 [The correct number is actually 408-286-7071]. 
He's the only one that caught the 
fact that the other half of the fence, (which we had 
replaced by another contractor earlier) didn't have 
pressure treated kickboards and had substandard 
fenceposts. He's really sharp, and that's who we're 
going with.

All I can say is don't go with Service Tech in San Jose, they were really great up front and the price was right, but their follow through on the job and their manner of collecting payment was atrocious!

I highly recommend Quality Built Deck and Fence (Saleh Nayab, proprietor). In 2004, he charged between $30-$32 a foot for a 7'plus redwood fence. He's very quality focused (i.e. uses screws verses nails...takes his time). He is easy to work with.

Bailey Fence builds chain link fences. Since they do huge commercial projects, I was pleasantly surprised that they were willing to take on a small job in our backyard. They were prompt in driving all the way out from Hayward to estimate the job. The crew was also very prompt in showing up when they were supposed to, and they worked quickly and professionally, doing a perfect job.

The downside are that they are a bit expensive and that I could not get them to give me the exact day they would be coming out; they only told me the week they could make it, and gave me a phone call the night before the crew could come out. Normally, I wouldn't agree to that with a  home improvement contractor, but in this case I had a hard time finding a contractor who would come out to do a small residential chain link fence job.
