Fitness Center Recommendations collected by Debbie Cunningham on October 19, 2005

    1. 24 Hour is the closest and not too bad. They are always open and have a large assortment of equipment. However, I moved to The Club of Mountain Viewa couple of years ago and like it a lot better. 24 hour is always running a special and has a constant stream of people and employees crowding the place. It is also not very clean. The Club is short on equipment but is always clean and I recognize and know many of the members so enjoy it. They also offer basketball and racquetball courts.

    2. I really like the YMCA. I used to go to the Family YMCA on Ross Road in Palo Alto when Evan was at Keys School. When Evan moved on to MVHS, I switched to the El Camino YMCA on Grant Rd across from El Camino Hospital. I prefer the Grant Rd facility, but both are nice and have good equipment and classes. I love the atmosphere at the Y, i.e. all ages and body types! I also like supporting a non-profit community-oriented organization, as opposed to a for-profit company. But the Y may be more expensive than some of the deals you can get at other fitness centers.

    3. The Palo alto Y is where I go. Excellent swimming pool and gym, etc.

    4. I'm a member of 24-Hour Fitness and really like it. It's big, so there's lots of equipment, which translates to almost never having to wait. They're always updating their equipment, too, especially in the cardio room. They've got a treadclimber, which no one else I've asked has one in their other gyms. They're always running special membership deals. When I joined, I paid up front for 3 years, and now it's going to cost me only $49/year for life! That's no typo! It's true!

I have a personal trainer there, too. She was assigned to me randomly when I first signed up 3 years ago and asked for one, but she's excellent! If your friend wants a PT, she should contact mine - Leyla Chang - 650-776-3860 (cell). She's listed on the wiki, too. Tell her to tell Leyla I referred her. I might get a free session or something (or maybe wishful thinking). If Leyla isn't available, your friend could ask her to recommend someone. A number of the trainers there seem really good to me.

    5. I went to Curves for a year, in both Palo Alto on El Camino and in Mtn. View off Castro. Liked them both, but liked the Mtn View site better (seemed to be a younger, more upbeat crowd).

    6. I use The Club on Middlefield between Moffett and 237. I recommend it if the scope of services fits your interests.

    7. My spouse and I belong to 24 Hour fitness. Within walking distance of Monta Loma!

    8. I used to belong to SPA in Los Altos. It's clean, well run and women only, which I now prefer over a coed gym. Pool is clean and not crowded. Pink carpeting; pleasant atmosphere. Parking was
relatively easy. I did weights and did yoga. Tell your friend to go for a day pass and see if she likes it.

    9. The martial arts studio where Alice and the kids and I are studying Tae Kwon Do has a cardio-kickboxing class on weeknights 6:30-7:30. I recommend it highly.

Laura, the instructor for the class, has a 2nd degree black belt and leads a
serious workout for about 15 women and a few men. She used to also teach my
sparring class on Fridays, but has cut back her hours to just the cardio class.
There are no machines; they use the mats that cover the floor, jump rope, and
gloves with the punching bags. No showers, no lockers, just a good workout.
There is a sound system and Laura uses a microphone to lead the class; she
wears ordinary workout clothes, not her martial arts uniform.

Probably 90% of the students in the Tae Kwon Do program there are kids age 5 to
18, so the place has a strong family atmosphere (but the youngest kids have
already come and gone by 6:30).

The studio is on North Rengstorff just south of the CostCo center. The biggest
drawback is that the Krispy Kreme shop and McDonalds are right around the
    corner!

Their email address is mailto:[email protected] I have no idea what they charge.

    10. I started going to Curves a couple of months ago. I really like it, in particular that the machines are hydraulic; the stronger you get, the more you can push/pull. Less chance of hurting oneself than with weights. I've gone to the Curves in Mountain View and both of the ones in Palo Alto. All fine.

    11. I belong to the Club of Mountain View, on Middlefield near Whisman. I love it! The people are nice, there are tons of classes, and I have never had a problem getting a machine. It is clean. It seems like "real" people go there, rather than gym bunnies, if you know what I mean. Ask about the anniversary deal - I think you can get some amazing price like $89 for 2 years!
If she mentions a member as a referrer, that person gets some kind of thanks from the club.

    12. I go to the Spa of Los Altos - ladies only, which is very nice. Month to month contract - $69 per month. All fitness classes are free, personal trainers - also all women - available for extra. Never crowded, never have to wait to use a machine - has a pool for water aerobics (I've never done this class so can't recommend it), jacuzzi area, showers, hair dryers, etc. Only negative might be that it's definitely a middle aged to older crowd (I'm 40 and feel like a baby there).
