Inexpensive cuts, especially recommended for kids (March 2011)

•Great Clips, 3902 Middlefield, Palo Alto (near Piazza’s), multiple recommendations: Nothing fancy but a boy’s haircut is about $12 and they do a decent job; my only suggestion is they like to cut short with clippers, so I ask them to do a scissor cut, at least for the front. Very quick. Nice people and good price for haircuts. Ann is patient with my 3 year old, and does a perfectly decent job for $13; when you make an appt. make sure to mention her; there are other clippers there who are not so great, specifically Yvonne was rather grumpy with my son.

•Christine’s Salon, 2425 California St (at Showers, next to the shoe repair), multiple recommendations: Sue cut my hair, at least as well as the $15 cuts I was getting at Grateful Head on Showers. They were very friendly in there. Lady there was very nice and it was less than $10. A good simple haircut. $10 per kid; one had Su, the other had Melisa; one (I think maybe Su) was very, very quick and didn’t say much; the other was more detailed and took just a bit longer (but still quick), also talking to my son more; both haircuts came out fine; the only complaint I had was that they both ended up with tons of (cut) hair around their shirt collars — itchy!

•Haircuts, 580 N Rengstorff Avenue (Monta Loma Plaza), multiple recommendations: It's cheap for men ($11), so I'm sure kids will be about the same. They do a great job!

•Grateful Head, 530 Showers Drive (near WalMart): recommended

•Hair 7, 225 San Antonio Rd, Ste 5 (near Safeway): $9 haircuts on Wed's. Been doing that for years.

•Julie Q's, 951 West Dana Street (downtown): Julie is the owner and she's very fast. $15. My son has a shag (think Justin Bieber) long cut plus she does a good women's haircut, so I think she'd be good with little girls, too.

•Campus Barber Shop, 475 South California Avenue (Palo Alto): Very good, nice people

•Connie Fregoso at Yavar Hair Studio, 4115 El Camino Way (Palo Alto): My guys have gone to Connie since their first haircut; she just did one’s and he likes it, but I'm not thrilled with the curly haircut she's done for the other

•J Salon, 744 San Antonio Rd, Ste 8 (Palo Alto): I just met a guy whose son LOVES going to Angel... and it's $15.

Haircut!

I like Haircut! over by the Golden Phoenix. Tom cuts my hair. It costs $10. The minimum credit card charge is $15, so he gets a $5 tip.
This guy knows what he's doing and he's a nice guy. I'm a man, so ladies, I don't know what his skill level is in cutting women's hair.

Julia Jiran

Julia Jiran has been cutting my hair, as well as my husband's, for almost 20 years. She also has been cutting my son's hair since he was a toddler (he's almost 8). She has a station at the Hairshaper's Club in the Town and Country shopping center (across from Stanford) facing El Camino. She worked for Hairshapers for many years, but now has an independent business working out of the same store. My husband refuses to let anyone else cut his hair any more and she is great with both adults and kids. Julia was wonderful when my son was little and hated having his hair cut (she would take him outside and let him watch the dogs, birds and people while she cut his hair).
Her prices seem reasonable (from what I have seen) - adult haircuts are about $35 and kids about $20.

Appointments can be made through Hairshapers Club 329-8040. They are closed on Mondays. Julia usually works Wednesday-Sunday.

Connie Fregoso

Connie Fregoso, former Monta Loma neighbor, has been my hairdresser for years. Her haircuts are excellent and inexpensive. She is convenient to Mountain View and Palo Alto. Connie Fregoso at Yavar: 4115 El Camino Way (next to Su Hong Restaurant), Palo Alto, 650-630-6757, Adults $14, Children $12

I second Connie!

We all go to Connie Fregoso at Yavar in PA on El Camino Way next to Su Hong. She's great and gave both my boys their first haircut at one year old. She started cutting my hair a year or two ago and I like it (and it's only fourteen bucks!). She gave my husband a great new and current "do" that is very cool. He's due for a trim but we took a picture of Josh DuHamel (the hottie from "Las Vegas") and Connie duplicated it. She's great.

I tried out Connie. She was quick and very nice to talk to. No frills: no wash, no dry, just a good cut. She doesn’t take appointments. (June 2006)

Anita at Michael Lucich

In Palo Alto, "Anita" at Michael Lucich (located next to Border's on Univ. Ave) cuts my hair. She charges $50.00. I like how she styles my baby-fine hair and I enjoy her company.
