How to report an unsafe driver to the California Highway Patrol:

1. Call one of the following agencies:

  • San Jose CHP at 1-408-467-5400

  • Redwood City CHP at 1-650-369-6261

2. Tell them you wish to report an "unsafe driver", and give them:

  • The license plate number

  • The location and time

  • A description of the behavior(s) you consider unsafe

  • As many of the following as possible: vehicle make, model, and driver description

3. State that you want a warning letter sent.

They will send a warning letter (read: nasty-gram) to the registered owner. A copy of that letter is also kept on file. That copy will be available to a judge in the event there is ever an accident involving the registered owner or the vehicle.

You can use this reporting mechanism anywhere in California. For best results, however, you should contact the [WWW]CHP office nearest to the incident whenever possible.

THIS WORKS.
