More commonly, Matthew's surname was spelled "Camfield". Mathew was born in Harleston, Northampts, England. He was born in 1604, died in 1673. On moving to the Colonies, he first settled in New Haven Colony before 1637. He then removed to Norwalk in 1652 and finally to Newark, New Jersey in 1666-67. In Norwalk, Camfield Island and Creek was originally granted to Matthew, first settler and named for him. Matthew was one of the Patentees in the Charter of Connecticut Colony, granted by King Charles II, 1664-65. He was Judge of Fairfield County, Connecticut; Member of the General Court of Connecticut, 1650-66; Officer of the Cavalry Troop of Connecticut, 1655-60; Collector for "Yale"College, 1645; Assessor 1646-48; and Surrogate,1658-60. Matthew was married to Sarah Treat (born 1620, England, died circa 1673). Sarah was daughter of Hon. Richard Treat, whose son, Robert, was Governor of Connecticut Colony, starting in 1683.
