In its previous incarnation as Al's Liquors, this store was described as the "ugliest liquor store in Oakland" by an O.P.D. Lieutenant, due to loitering and drug dealing occurring outside the store.
In 2004, it lost its conditional use permit. In 2005, the owners lost an appeal to this decision.
The owner of the store claimed he is guilty only of being too timid to go out on the street and tell these guys to move because he is afraid of getting shot.
5 years later, in 2009, the owner said that drug dealers and loiterers still congregate around his store.
