"And How Are the Children" is a mural by AmendTDK on the back of Saigon Market at 2331 Telegraph Avenue across from the Stork Club in Northgate. Painted in January, 2015, the mural is "in response to OUSD giving up on several schools in oakland and putting them on an "auction block" (see AmendTDK's instagram). Charter schools are a big and controversial thing in Oakland right now. The title is a Maasai tribe greeting. The text in the bottom right reads: "A community can only thrive when its youth do. May we never forget that the children are the heart of our community and may we never give up on them!"
The picture depicts a kid playing with blocks wearing a shirt that says "Our education matters."
