Charles James Ignatious Devlin (1858 – November 2, 1928) was the architect of the St. Francis de Sales Church (which in 1962 was elevated to Cathedral status). Devlin was also the official architect of the Archdiocese of San Francisco under Archbishop Patrick Riordan, a position which began in 1887 and lasted for many years.
Many of the most prominent buildings in the San Francisco Catholic Archdiocese were designed by Devlin, which underwent massive expansion in the late 1890s through the turn of the century to accommodate the rapid growth of Catholics moving to the San Francisco Bay Area. Devlin's work included churches, convents, hospitals and schools.
Devlin's younger brother Leo J. Devlin was also an architect. He started as a draftsman in Charles' firm and later became a partner.
