"Both Jack London and Charmian Kittredge London can be considered Oaklanders, which appeals to the pride of this community, and most of the important events of their lives centered in this city. Both resided in Oakland when they first met, and their best work was done in this city. While they traveled the world over their home base was Oakland. From this city they started in the famous voyage of the "Snark," and the "Snark" was built on Oakland Harbor, now lined with great shipyards constructing ocean liners. Oakland furnished Jack with much material for his stories, and he turned into romance some of the great development schemes of this section. He made a whole novel out of Realty Syndicate of Oakland." 1
