The Cogswell Monument, erected by Dr. Henry Daniel Cogswell in Mountain View Cemetery, is an enormous granite obelisk flanked by four statues of the personal virtues he so strongly believed: Faith, Hope, Charity and Temperance.
Dr. Cogswell, a dentist, and his wife Caroline came to California after the start of the California Gold Rush where he preformed dental services for the miners. The couple founded the Cogswell College in San Francisco, and were major crusaders in the Temperance Movement. Cogswell was one of San Francisco's first millionaires through his real estate investments and mining stocks.
