Danny Wan was a member of the City Council from 2000 to 2005, preceding Pat Kernighan in office as the representative for District 2. Wan, who was the first openly gay member of the City Council, was appointed to replace John Russo after Russo's election as City Attorney.
He resigned from the City Council in January 2005, stating that he was not paid enough as a Councilmember to take care of his aging parents. In November of 2012, he was appointed to serve as the Port Attorney for the Port of Oakland.
