Edwin Reuben Hawkins (August 19, 1943 – January 15, 2018) was a gospel musician and composer. He was leader of the Edwin Hawkins Singers, best known for his arrangement of "Oh Happy Day" released in 1968. Wikipedia describes him as "one of the originators of the urban contemporary gospel sound." 1
Hawkins won 4 Grammys, including one for "Oh Happy Day" in 1970. 1
His brother was musician and pastor Walter Hawkins.
