The Eng family has deep California and Oakland roots.
The family can trace their roots back to a 2-year old girl, the sole survivor of a fire in a gold mining camp in the 1850s. By 1906 the family had moved to San Francisco, and like thousands of others, fled to Oakland following the 1906 earthquake. Raymond Eng was born a few years later in 1911, and went on to a lengthy career as an optometrist and a member of the Oakland city council.
