In addition to being the writer of the poem Charming Oakland, J. W. Dutton was also the author of The Crisis (1898) Oakland, Calif., and California, Earth's Paradise: Oakland, Its Eden published sometime in the early 1900's, the latter of which was adopted by the Oakland Chamber of Commerce as the official paean. 1

In 1891 Mrs. J. W. Dutton of Oakland, an officer of the Oakland Nationalist Club represented 200 members on the following petition presented by Senator Dargie, signed by citizens of Oakland, and ordered printed in the Journal:  "We, the undersigned citizens of Alameda County, do memorialize the Legislature of California to so amend the State Constitution as to grant equal rights in suffrage, irrespective of sex:" 2
