JVB Goodrich was born in New York and moved to Michigan in 1858. In 1861 he enlisted in the 4th Michigan Infantry and served in the Civil War. He moved to Oakland in 1865 and practiced law, served as the County Clerk for four years, and was elected Justice of the Piece in 1880.3
